Great Scottish Run - 48 Hours To Go

2 SEP2011

Great Scottish Run

Sunday will see Glasgow host one of the largest events in the running calendar, the Great Scottish Run. After months of training, competitors will be sent on their way by former decathlete Daley Thomson, who will start the race at George Square.

The event will also see a number of ex-Olympians competing, with gold medal winning sprinter Jason Gardener and swimming champion Mark Foster all confirmed. Another celebrity guest, Nell McAndrew, will lead the line-up of TV stars taking part.

With over 23,000 participants taking part in last year's race and a total of £1.5 million raised for charity, Glasgow is set for another record turnout for the 10k and half-marathon events.

Last year's 10k was won by Matthew Gillespie of Shettleston Harriers, completing the run with a time of 31:12, with the first female Beth Potter crossing the line in 34:39. In the half-marathon, Ethiopian Haliu Mekonnen and Kenyan Caroline Kilel were last year's course champions, with times of 1:01:53 and 1:09:11 respectively.

The race begins at George Square, with a start time of 9.30am for 10k competitors and 11am for the half-marathon runners. Online entries are now closed for the event, but entrants can still register in-person at Jury's Inn, Jamaica Street, until Saturday, September 3. For more information, visit the event website.
