Nathalie Jones at Race for Life Glasgow

Milngavie-based runner Nathalie Jones was in a state of disbelief as she approached the finishing line at the Race for Life 5K held earlier this month at Glasgow Green. What was surprising the freelance dietitian was that she was the fastest participant in the event, finishing ahead of 15,000 others.

Nathalie told scottishrunningguide.com: "The race for life was great - I could not believe that I was running at the front and won it! Took me about a week to recover but was well worth it."

Nathalie Jones, who is the dietitian with the Glasgow running store, Achilles Heel took first place in a time of 19:39 seconds. The event attracted over 15,000 entrants, making it the biggest 5k event in the UK.

We asked Nathalie for her key fuelling tips for a big race and she identified hydration (make sure you drink 1.5-2 litres the day before a race and about 500ml on the morning of the race); sufficient energy stores; a breakfast that works for you (Nathalie's favourite is a bowl of porridge with fruit); and practising your pre-race eating and drinking routine on training runs.

Nathalie Jones is also a regular contributor to SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE - check out her column in our summer edition or visit her website.
