Glaswegians Just Do It

8 JUL2011

Just Do It Runners

Runners in Glasgow have a fantastic new way to train with the launch of a free weekly running club from Buchanan Street's flagship Nike store. Nike's free running clubs have already proved a success around the world in locations such as Chicago, Paris and London and it is hoped that runners in Scotkand's biggest city will make the most of this opportunity to 'get fit for free' in the same way!

Yesterday evening saw the official launch of the Nike+ Run Club and to celebrate, 100 local runners were invited to join Kilmacolm raised singer-songwriter Yasmin in store for an exclusive DJ set as they warmed-up, followed by a 5K run through the heart of Glasgow's city centre. The runners looked the part in their brightly coloured (and free) technical t-shirts and the store was a hubbub of excitement and anticipation as everyone waited for the run to begin.

Nike+ Run Clubs are an inspiring way for the ever expanding Nike Running community to stay motivated, offering runners of all levels the chance to hit the streets with the store's expert running team. Departing from the Glasgow store every Thursday at 6.30pm, the weekly sessions will be led by trained Nike Pacesetters and will offer differing distances so that runners always get a bespoke experience that suits their training goals.

Nike Glasgow's run specialist, Darren, will be one of the experts leading the Thursday sessions. A Sports Science graduate from Glasgow University and qualified personal trainer, he is there to make sure you train effectively and achieve whatever goal you have set yourself. He told scottishrunningguide.com: "Every Thursday we will take runners out on a 5km or 7.5km route around the city with a view to adding in a 10km route in the future. We are all so excited about the launch of the running club and can't wait to get started and encourage the people of Glasgow to 'Just Do It!'"

There was a good mix of runners there for the launch, from the superfit to those who see the new club as an ideal way to venture back into fitness in a fun, free way! scottishrunningguide.com spoke to runner Yvonne MacPherson from Falkirk, who said: "I took part in the Glasgow Women's 10K back in May and haven't done much running since. As a 'solo runner' I thought I would come along and give it a go - break myself back into a training routine and see if I can manage running, talking and having a laugh at the same time!"
