The Ultra Ultra

23 JUN2011

Over 100 runners completed last weekend's gruelling West Highland Way race in very difficult conditions. Carnegie Harrier Richie Cunningham (16:24:49) was first to reach Fort William, just 7 minutes ahead of Dutch challenger Jan-Albert Lantink. American Mark Godale from Cleveland, Ohio was third in 17:41:29.

Kate Jenkins (Hunters Bog Trotters) was the fastest woman to cover the 95 mile route from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in 19:08:20. Garscube Harrier Sharon Law finished second just 3 and a half minutes later with her club-mate Debbie Martin-Consani third in 19.39.57.

The iconic race attracted runners from Canada, the USA, Australia and the Netherlands. For a flavour of the demands of running in the West Highland Way race read John Kynaston's report of the race on his blog.

The West Highland Way race was leg five of the Montane Scottish Ultra Marathon (SUMS) series. Watch the SUMS website for an update on the 'grand prix' points table. The leader after 4 rounds Paisley's Paul Giblin managed fifth place on Saturday so will maintain his place at the head of the table. Other contenders Mark Caldwell and Mike Raffan also picked up valuable points in Round 5.
