Record Turnout At Mersey Tunnel 10K

15 JUN2011

A record turnout at the 2011 Mersey Tunnel 10k highlighted the upsurge in running in Liverpool this year. Boosted by the arrival of the new RunLiverpool marathon on October 9, the Liverpool half marathon and the Womens 10k enjoyed bumper fields, and the trend continued with 3,200 runners at Sunday's 10K.

With the 1.5 mile Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel partially closed off to traffic the distinctive 6.2 mile course sent runners from Pall Mall in Liverpool city centre to New Brighton, following a path past Seacombe Ferry.

Liverpool Harrier John McCole was first to cross the finishing line in 31:30. Adam Pierce (31:49) and Matthew Rose (32.36) filled the other podium places. Jenny Clague completed a double for Liverpool Harriers - fastest woman in 38.48. However the real stars of the day were the thousands of fun runners who refused to let the blustery conditions dampen their spirits.

Race organiser Alan Rothwell commented: "It was great to see a record turnout for the Tunnel 10K in its sixth year. This unique event goes from strength to strength each year however I'm sure that the 'marathon' factor came into play this time. There's a real buzz about the city about the big one on October 9."

There are still a few places remaining for this year's inaugural Liverpool marathon - check out the details at the event website.
