14 MAY2011

Tiso, the independent outdoor retailer has announced, that it is introducing a new dedicated adventure running department in five of its stores across the Scotland. The new departments will feature base layers, outerwear, footwear and accessories from a range of suppliers including; Inov-8, The North Face, Salomon, Gore Running and Haglofs.

Adventure running has exploded in popularity across the UK in recent years, with some sources suggesting it has grown by as much as 150 per cent in the last two years alone, and now Tiso is hoping to encourage and support more people in giving this exciting sport a go.

As of this spring, adventure running departments will feature at Tiso stores; (Aberdeen, John Street) ; Edinburgh (Rose Street); Glasgow (Buchanan St); Inverness Outdoor Experience; and Perth Outdoor Experience, where Tiso's in-store specialists can offer expert, tailored advice on equipment, clothing and preparation. The collections are also available online at www.tiso.com.

As part of this new activity, Tiso has teamed up with No Fuss events to be the retail sponsor for the Trail half marathon at Ben Nevis (May 22), Trail half marathon at Kirroughtree (July 10) and 10 in the Glen (July 16).

The origins of adventure running are in off road running including 'hill running' and involves running over a variety of surfaces such as dirt, roads, mountains or sand over long distances where the racer has to overcome the environments natural obstacles. Challenges can include river crossing, scrambling, snow, extreme high or low temperatures and high altitudes.

Commenting on the launch of the new adventure running service, Chris Tiso, chief executive said: "Adventure running is a great way for people to get fit and challenge themselves whilst taking in some of the UK's most amazing scenery and backdrops.

"Despite it's name, with the right equipment Adventure Running can actually be safer and better for you than road running in terms of sustaining sports injuries. Every step in adventure running is different rather than repetitive, so muscles don't get the same wear and tear as road runners experience.

"If you fancy trying out one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable outdoor sports in the UK, make sure and pop in to your local Tiso store and ask one of our experts for advice on getting the right shoes, gear and accessories."

David Scott of Scottish Hill Runners welcomed the announcement of the new dedicated departments saying: "Scottish Hill Runners, the organisation providing services for hill runners in Scotland, welcomes the setting up of the new Adventure Running Department at Tiso and hopes that it will encourage wider participation in off-road running, especially hill running. Adventure running events such as those sponsored by Tiso this year are a great way to make the transition from road to hill, being on tracks and paths with stunning scenery."
