William Sickel Eyes Record

6 APR2011

William Sichel

William Sichel, Scotland's top ultra-distance runner, warmed up for his attempt at a 129 year old record next month in Hungary with a solid performance at Saturday's Crawley 12 hour track race. Running his shortest race for 7 years he finished fifth overall and first in his age group (M55). He ran a total of 70.48 miles over the 12 hours.

Sichel now returns to Orkney for a brief rest before the final stages of his preparation for the Unix 6 day road race at Balatonfured, Hungary (May 4-10). That's when he will attempt to break the Scottish record of 567 miles set by Edinburgh's George Noremac in New York in 1882 - reckoned to be the oldest surviving record in Scottish athletics history.

Sichel's last proper 6 day race was in 2008 when he ran 532 miles. To break the record William will have to average almost 95 miles a day for the six days. When achieving his personal best for a 6 day event he averaged almost 89 miles and believes that he has a chance to up that daily mileage to put him within striking distance of possibly Scotland's most remarkable running record.
