Shine At Midnight

27 JAN2011

walkers at the start of the Shine midnight marathon

Always fancied doing the marathon distance but not sure that you could last the pace? One solution might be to do the 26 and a bit miles but in a more relaxed way in the shape of Cancer Research UK's night-time walking marathon, Shine 2011, which is now open for entries.

Shine 2011 aims to raise vital funds for cancer research and bring hope and light to the lives of those affected by the disease. As part of their fundraising, walkers will be able to raise money for a particular cancer that means something to them. Cancer Research UK funds research into all types of cancer and this is a way of making Shine even more personal and relevant for everyone taking part.

Along the different routes light will be used to symbolise bringing hope to the darkness of cancer. The light also illustrates Cancer Research UKs progress, ambition and how together, we can beat cancer.

The night-time events will see the cities illuminated as participants take to the streets in an inspirational procession of light, passing well known landmarks. It is hoped that 21,000 men and women will register and raise £5 million to fund vital research into the disease. Shine is open to men and women aged over 13 and entrants can choose to walk either a 26.2 or 13.1 mile route.

  • Shine Manchester takes place at Manchester Central on Bank Holiday Sunday May 1
  • Shine Glasgow takes place at the SECC on Saturday, September 10
  • Shine London takes place at the O2 on Saturday, October 1
