35,000 Hit Madrid Streets
31 DEC2010
35,000 recreational runners will take to the streets of Madrid today - New Year's Eve - for the 46th running of the San Silvestre Vallecana. Conditions look favourable for the big 10k race with weather forecasters predicting a cloudy night with rain likely, and temperatures ranging from 7º and 9ºC by race time.
Runners will benefit from the slightly downhill course and they will also be able to enjoy the efforts of some of the world's best in the elite event that follows the mass race. Favourite in the men's race is Madrid-based Eritrean Zersenay Tadese, the reigning World Half Marathon record holder.
Tadese is returning from injury and challenges are expected from a strong local contingent led by the reigning European Cross Country silver medallist Ayad Lamdassem and Jesús España, the current European 5000m silver medallist. In addition, World indoor 3000m runner-up Sergio Sánchez and the European Marathon silver medal holder Chema Martínez will also be in contention.
Portugal's European Cross Country champion Jessica Augusto is the standout attraction among the women's line-up.
