More Reasons To Keep Active This Winter

19 NOV2010

Runners in Fancy Dress

Exercising outdoors in winter may not appear very tempting when you're snuggled up indoors listening to the wind howling down the chimney, but jogscotland, Scotland's recreational running network, know otherwise.

As anyone who has participated in a running event under the beating rays of the summer sunshine knows, running outdoors in cooler temperatures can be a much more enjoyable experience. After all, there's no such thing as bad weather for runners, just inappropriate clothing and a tendency to drag your feet once the darker nights set in.

Fortunately, winter is a busy time in the running events calendar with a wide range of Christmas runs to keep you training even in the dark and the damp.

The jogscotland Christmas Cracker 5k takes place at Strathclyde Country Park on Sunday 5 December. Not only is this a fun day out for all the family, filled with festive cheer, fancy dress and Secret Santa spot prizes, but training for an event during winter will keep you motivated to continue your training routine when it's cold out.

Why not train for the Christmas Cracker with a local jogscotland group? As part of a jogging group, outdoor exercise will become much more tempting as it promises both social and health benefits. And with over 300 local community groups across the country, catering for complete beginners to more experienced runners, there is a group to meet everyone's needs.

What's more, running with a group is much safer than running alone after dark. Just stay safe and be seen by choosing high-visibility and reflective clothing when exercising outdoors during winter.

Numbers are limited for the Christmas Cracker, so dust down your trainers, grab your friends and family and your best Christmas outfit and join a very festive-clad bunch for a walk, jog or run around the beautiful Strathclyde Park.

For more information on joining a jogscotland group and to register for the jogscotland Christmas Cracker 5k, visit the jogscotland website.
