Run, Strip, Jump At The New York Marathon

22 SEP2010

Scott with his t-shirts

Fundraiser Scott McDougall will be shedding more than a few pounds as he runs the New York Marathon later this year. Scott, 40 from Westhill, Aberdeenshire, aims to start the race wearing NINE T-shirts - and will remove one every three miles as part of his bid to raise £10,000 in support of good causes.

Scott is 'selling' sponsorship space on each of the T-shirts, potentially giving north-east firms who support his efforts exposure during the event. The top three highest sponsors will also land three Manchester United tickets for home games against Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester City.

It is the first marathon run for Scott, an insurance agent with NFU Mutual in Westhill, after he caught the running bug only a few months ago. The cash he raises will go to Sue Ryder Care as well as Westhill Rotary Club for distribution to local causes.

Scott, who will be running in the kilt during the November 7 marathon, said: "Once I decided to do the run, I wanted to raise as much cash as possible by doing something a little different that also worked in some way to repay those kind enough to support me. My plan is for each of the T-shirts I wear to be sponsored by individual firms. I'll start wearing all 9 and discard one every three miles, with the last leg being just short of that distance. I'll make a point of stopping at each 'change' to have my photo taken on behalf of each sponsor - which is also a great excuse for taking breathers during the run!"

Scott is looking to secure sponsorship in the region of £750 for each T-shirt ahead of the marathon. The first £2,400 he raises will go to Sue Ryder Care, in recognition of the backing they are providing for his run, and the remainder will be split between the charity and the rotary club.
