Peterhead Half Marathon Success

17 SEP2010

A piper leads the runners to the start line

Peterhead held its first half marathon in 12 years last weekend and it has been hailed a huge success by runners, organisers and supporters. Many runners are already looking forward to competing again next year. Over 119 people took part from as far away as Shetland and Edinburgh, and it is hoped when all the money is in £3000 will be raised for Scottish Spina Bifida Association .

The race was jointly organised by the Starlight Parade Committee and Peterhead Jogscotland, who called in local MP Eilidh Whiteford to start the race. Joining Eilidh were Dylan Forman and Andrew Kind, who were both born with Spina Bifida and have benefitted from the support of the race charity, the Spina Bifida Association.

Nicku Millot won the race in a time of 1:17:07, with the ladies race being won by Fraserburgh's Elaine Whyte in 1:26:38. The first locals home were husband and wife Cameron and Jennifer Robertson from Peterhead Jogscotland; Cameron running only his second half marathon came 5th overall in a personal best time of 1hr 24 mins 51secs which was a great achievement.

Roselyn Bruce, a member of Starlight Parade Committee and leader with Peterhead jogscotland said, " We are just thrilled how the event went. Everyone really enjoyed it and the weather was great on the day, which really helped. We would like to thank all the public who came to out support the runners at Catto Park as they crossed the finishing line, and at different points on the route."

Following the success of the race, organisers will now be looking to set a date for next year's race. Full results of Sunday's race can be found here.
