Ron Hill Celebrates Commonwealth Anniversary

9 AUG2010

Ron Hill with Graham Richards and Mike Deegan of Ronhill and Hilly Ltd

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Ron Hill's record breaking gold medal win in Edinburgh's Commonwealth Games in 1970, the staff of Bollin Group presented him with a special cake and celebrated his success with a video collage of Ron's major achievements throughout his career.

Before his commonwealth exploits in 1970, Ron had already become the first Briton to win the Boston Marathon, setting a new course record there. He came to Edinburgh on a high and smashed the world marathon record with a time of 2:09:28, a record which stood until fellow Briton Ian Thompson knocked 14 seconds from it in 1974.

Since his historic win, Dr Ron Hill MBE has founded Ronhill Sports and Hilly Ltd, both successful sporting brands. Hill, who is approaching his 72th birthday said,"1970 was a special year for me. Following on from my gold medal the previous year, at the European Championships, in Athens, my training and racing all went to plan and I was able to perform at the highest level".

Britain's athletes are gearing up to take part in this year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi and many will be aspiring to repeat Ron's record breaking ways at these games.
