13 JUL2010

People across Peterhead are being urged to become part of our Active Nation by stepping up to the Peterhead Marinathon 3k challenge, to be held on 19 July as part of this year's Scottish Week. The annual Marinathon - a 3 km walk, jog or run - will this year be named the Active Nation Peterhead Marinathon in support of the nationwide initiative to encourage and motivate Scots to get active and get more out of life.

The Active Nation Marinathon kicks off at Lido at 7pm, and everyone taking part will receive an Active Nation T-Shirt, goody bag, water bottle and a complimentary medal. In return they will be encouraged set themselves a personal activity goal to keep them active over the coming months.

Event organiser Stephen Bruce, who first heard of Active Nation when he won the Active Nation Scottish Cup for the day in recognition of his Jog Scotland achievements, is encouraging the whole of the Blootoon to get involved and hopes to build on the record 450 people who completed the Marinathon last year.

Stephen Bruce, Jogscotland's Chairman in Peterhead, said: "The theme of the event is 'Let's Get Active in the Blootoon' which ties in perfectly with the aims of Active Nation. When I learnt more about Active Nation it seemed like a natural fit to get them involved in this year's Peterhead Marinathon. We want people to get active, have fun and feel good and this year's event promises all of these.

"We are just thrilled that Active Nation has decided to make this year's Peterhead Marinathon one of its major events. In return we are hoping to get 500 locals along on the day and will be encouraging them to set Personal Activity Goals for the future."

Since Peterhead Jogscotland launched the Peterhead Marinathon 4 years ago the numbers for people of all ages taking part has increased year on year to 450 people in 2009.
Minimum entry for the Marinathon is £2 and all money raised will be in aid of the Light Up Peterhead Christmas Lights Appeal. The Active Nation Peterhead Marinathon is sponsored by Tenants First, Falck Nutec, Peterhead Port Authority, Hughes Macdonald and Davidson, Style Council and Urban Kids.
