Runman Not Walkman

22 JUN2010

Runners taking part in this weekend's Isle of Arran Half Marathon are being reminded of some special instructions from race organisers, regarding both the route and travel arrangements for the race on Sunday June 27. Runners are being warned that mp3 players are strictly forbidden for safety reasons and that the start time of the race has been changed due to roadworks.

Runners have been warned that the race takes place on country roads, which will not be closed to traffic for the race, therefore all runners must be able to hear traffic coming from both directions. Any runner using a device with earphones will be disqualified as organisers are warning that 'failure to follow this rule may lead to death'.

Also, the road between Brodick and Blackwaterfoot, that is used by race buses and during the race itself, will be closed on the day of the event for major repairs to be carried out. Buses will need to go around the south of the island, with an increased journey time. Therefore, the race will now begin at 13:00. Buses will leave after the race and prize giving at around 17:00. Organisers are warning participants that this now means that the only available ferry for runners and spectators to return to mainland Scotland will be at 19:20, arriving in Ardrossan at 20:15. The route may also need to be altered to accommodate the roadworks.

Runners can still enter the scenic race, before the closing date on Thursday June 24.
