Sun Shines On Mens 10K

20 JUN2010

The start of the 2010 MHFS 10K for Men

Scotland's men were out in force in brilliant sunshine at today's Mens Health Forum Scotland 10K for Men in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park. Robel Negash of Bellahouston Harriers won the race, beating the previous course record by 1 minute and 3 seconds. Almost 3,000 men took part in the father's day race, making it the biggest in the event's history.

Before the start, expectations were high and the race village provided a real family party atmosphere. First-timers Johnny McNeil and John Wilson were looking forward to the race, raising money for Rainbow House in Troon.

Malcolm Gow joined his friend David Mein to run the race, also for the first time, after David had recommended he gave it a try. They were looking for a sub one hour time in the summer sunshine. Soon-to-be dad, Andy Birnie of Bellahouston Road Runners, was also taking part in the UK's sole 'men only' race for the first time, on what was almost his first father's day.

Winner, Robel Negash

Robel Negash established a clear lead from an early stage and dominated the race. He crossed the finishing line in 30:47. Robel was followed by Kilbarchan's Bobby Quinn from Paisley, who ran a time of 31.52 minutes. In third place was 2008 and 2009 winner David Millar from Irvine in 32.15 minutes.

Robel Negash has been in Scotland for just 5 months seeking asylum from his native Eritrea, and told scottishrunningguide.com that he may have had an advantage in the warm temperatures, as he is much more comfortable in the heat.

Brian Douglas is cooled by his son, Paul

Robel's teammate, Brian Douglas, running a PB on the day, was greeted by his son as he crossed the finish line. After cooling down, he was looking forward to spending father's day afternoon with 5 year old Paul. Brothers Martin and Steven Donnelly ran the race in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support, as they do such a fantastic job looking after their dad, who is currently battling cancer. They were happy with their time of 52 minutes, especially as the warm conditions made running more difficult.

Race Director, Sarah McMillan was thrilled with the event, "It is just brilliant to see so many men show their commitment to getting fitter and healthier. The crowds were great in cheering the runners on, and the event would not have been possible without the help and support of the fantastic staff and volunteers, they went above and beyond to ensure this event was a success.

"It is always exciting to see a course record beaten, but each and every one of the runners is important to us, from the first to the last. Now we are looking forward to next year!"

Full results from the race are available here.
