Big Running Weekend

11 JUN2010

A great weekend of running in Scotland is in store as thousands of competitors prepare for big events across the country. Highlights are the Race for Life series in Edinburgh and Stirling, the Run Dunfermline events and the fourth and final leg of the Polaroid 10k series at Vale of Leven. Runners can expect good weather conditions - a fine day forecast in most areas on Saturday although it's due to be cloudy on Sunday with outbreaks of rain. Winds expected to be light and temperatures around 17/18 centigrade both days.

The big weekend starts on Friday night with the much-loved Black Rock 5 taking place in Kinghorn, Fife. 700 runners will head out on to the sands at the Firth of Forth, make their way round the Black Rock and head back to Kinghorn and the finish at the Ship Tavern. The fastest will be back in around 23 minutes while more modest competitors can take an hour or more before they claim the bottle of ale awarded to all finishers.

Saturday sees the Isle of Skye half marathon, the Pittencrieff Park 5K(Dunfermline) and parkruns in Glasgow, Edinburgh and at Strathclyde Park. Biggest turnouts will be on Sunday for the Race for Life double header at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh(10K starts at 10.30 and the 5K at 11.00), the Race for Life 5K at Stirling and the Dunfermline Half Marathon.

Sunday is a bumper day for running with smaller events in Peebles (10K), Livingston (10K trail), Dumfries (10K) and Elgin (5K) - check out the full list on our Race Listing.

Good luck to everyone running of course but especially to all the fellow runners in the Black Rock 5. On paper it probably looks like an unlikely race but it's one of my favourite. Don't know of any others that give you beer instead of a medal.

    Good times!
