Abbey's Challenge For Sick Kids

15 APR2010

Bob Thorburn, Bob Chatterton and Steve Morris

Three men have teamed up to run a 100-mile route from Newport on Tay to Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children, raising money in memory of Abbey Thorburn for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

Abbey Thorburn was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue tumour, a type of cancer that mostly affects children. Abbey was treated at the sick kids cancer ward in Edinburgh for three years, until she lost her battle against the cancer in November 2001, 10 days before her 8th birthday.

On August 6 and 7 2010, Bob Chatterton, Steve Morris and Abbey's uncle, Bob Thorburn, will attempt Abbey's Challenge, running 100 miles non-stop, from Newport on Tay to the hospital in Edinburgh where Abbey received her treatment.

The route will take them along the Fife coastal path and across the Forth Road Bridge before entering Edinburgh. Abbey's family, including her uncle Bob, have cycled the Fife coastal path on many occasions and this is why the route has been chosen. It will provide a picturesque and challenging running route for the three men.

Abbey's uncle has always wanted to raise money for the people who supported Abbey and their family and after years of training and building his endurance, he now feels ready to take on the challenge with two of his good friends.

The Sick Kids Friends Foundation provides support for families at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. The foundation gives children and their families extra support to help them through the hard times faced when a child is so unwell. Bob and his teammates hope to raise in excess of £5,000 to help the Sick Kids Friends Foundation to continue their fantastic work in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
