Colin Montgomerie, one of the world's leading golfers and the 2010 European Ryder Cup captain, is calling on runners to make a real charity effort in this year's Bupa Great Edinburgh Run.

Monty paid a visit to Braids Hill Golf Course in Edinburgh earlier to encourage his supporters to take part in the forthcoming Bupa Great Edinburgh Run on Sunday May 2 in aid of his cancer charity, the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation.

Colin was joined by members of staff from Edinburgh Leisure who will raise funds for the charity in the 10km event that will be held on a stunning city centre route around the Scottish capital, taking in Holyrood Palace, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament and the Royal Mile.

Colin said: "I've been genuinely touched by the support we have had in our bid to raise over £2 million to build the Elizabeth Montgomerie Building in Lanarkshire, an area with some of the highest cancer rates in Europe.

"We still have a long way to go, so we would appreciate the support of all the runners who could take part in the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run in aid of the Foundation. It's a magnificent course in one of the great cities of the world and hopefully next year, when I'm less busy on the golf course, I will be able to attend myself."

The event for all the family as it also Includes the Bupa Junior and Mini Great Edinburgh Run (for youngsters aged from three to 14).

The 10km Bupa Great Edinburgh Run is live on Channel Five and will feature thousands of runners of all abilities. For the first time, there will also e a special one hour highlights programme on BBC Scotland.
