10,000 Take to the Streets in Edinburgh

3 MAY2009

A record field of 10,000 runners entered the Great Edinburgh Run, which took in many of the city's famous landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument, Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile.

Micah Kogo from Kenya won the men's Bupa Great Edinburgh Run in style, clocking a time of 28.13. He was followed over the line by last year's winner, Bernanrd Kipyego, in second place with a time of 28.27 and Jose Manuel Martinez from Spain who finshed third with a time of 29.33. The first (adopted) Scot was Tsegal Tewelde of Shettleston Harriers in ninth position with a time of 30:45.

The women's title was won by Deena Kastor of the USA in a time of 32.38. She finished ahead of three times champion, Jelena Prokopcuka from Latvia who finished second with a time of 33.14 and Sally Barsosio from Kenya who finished third with a time of 33.34. The first Scot was Jennifer McClean of Edinburgh AC in ninth position with a time of 36:11.

Former Meadowbank, Hearts, Hibs and Scotland star, Darren Jackson set competitors off from the run's new city centre starting point on George IV Bridge. For the first time in the event's history, it was broadcast live on Channel Five. Entrants ranged from elite runners, to celebrities and charity fun runners.
