Glasgow parkrun On but may be Off-Road
7 JAN2010
Volunteers at Glasgow parkrun are delighted to announce that they have been given permission to use the Pollok Park fields on Saturday, January 9 as an alternative Winter conditions off-road 5k course, if the normal routes are unusable. If conditions are icy underfoot on the preferred courses, the event will be re-routed onto the snow covered fields. However if weather conditions deteriorate such that it is not safe to use even this course, the event may still be cancelled. Check this site for any further announcements. Please also do not take any unnecessary risks in trying to get to the event. Drive only if it is safe to do so. Use public transport where possible. Take care on the pavements and paths in and around the park. The main road in the park, and approaching the park, are generally well treated but it has been very cold at night, so there is still a likelihood of ice even on treated roads.
Winter conditions course
The course is in the fields below the hay field and carved woodpecker, to the right as you drive out of the park towards Haggs Road. It consists of three laps of just over one mile each. The course forms a rough figure of 8 without the paths crossing. A single lap of the course is mapped here: http://bit.ly/7p0Lg2 - Click Map and select Satellite or Hybrid to put the course in context.
Starting in the corner of the fields nearest the car park (exact location TBD), it runs in an anti-clockwise direction around the perimeter of the field, across the second bridge (closest to the hockey pitches), and around the perimeter (again, anti-clockwise) of the football pitches. Do not use the rough ground. If tape is marking the course, keep it to your left at all times.
When at the buildings/fenced car park attached to the Nether Pollok football pitch, pass with the large-ish tree on your left and take a right hand turn when the fence ends, towards the clay hockey pitches. Watch your footing. Run two corners of the lower hockey pitch, down the slope (there is a less steep route to the side of the road), then continue around the main field to complete one lap.
Tape and cones will be used and as many marshals will be on the course as volunteer numbers permit.
