It's a Family Affair ....in Ayr

Ayrshire families were out in force on Boxing Day to take part in the annual Ayr 5k Fun Run. The icy conditions meant that the event had to be transferred to the local beach where the hard sand, mild temperature and a little sunshine made for a great day.

Johnson Joust

Cambuslang's Ross Bark won the 5k race in 17:33, a bit outside of his 16:57 PB and precisely two minutes ahead of Scotland Commonwealth Games Swim Team hope Bruce Johnson. The 28 year old 'honest man' enjoying running on sand rather than in water for a change. Nick Abram earned third place in 20:03. Bruce's 19 year old brother Stuart claimed fourth in 20:11.

Clean Sweep for Ayrshire Lassies

Irvine's Sarah Munn won the women's race with a time of 20:53. The 18 year old Glasgow University student placed eighth overall, two places ahead of 19 year old Colleen Tait of Kilmaurs. The Herriot Watt student and Kilmarnock Harrier completed the race in a time of 21:33. 'Bonnie lass' Sarah Cassells ensured a clean sweep for Ayrshire, the Ayr Seaforth Junior earning third place with a time of 21:56.

Family Affairs

The brother Johnson's were not the only family members competing in the event, as an unofficial battle of the clans, no doubt resulting from Christmas Day bravado, saw a number of family members trying to outpace their parents, children or siblings.

Ayr's Calum Webster narrowly beat his son Euan to claim ninth spot, just two seconds ahead of the Ayr Seaforth Junior. Sarah Munn's wee sister Emily beat their father Alistair by one second. In the Boyle family battle 11 year old Angus beat his 13 year old brother Rory by two seconds, their father Peter by 26 seconds and nine year old Kirsten by more than seven minutes. Sarah Cassells' father Tom finished in 27th place.

Joel won the battle of the Rabinowitz brothers, the 13 year old beat his 10 year old brother Louis by more than four minutes and their mother Ann by more than six minutes. In the Eccles family race it was 13 year old Christopher who crossed the line first, just ahead of mother Donna and father Graeme. Alan won the Cunningham duel beating Caron by 110 seconds. Ten year old Brodie won the Good fight, beating 13 year old Cameron by more than six minutes. In the Whyte Christmas race 13 year old Ellis charged to the finish line to beat his father Jamie by one second. Nine year old Kiah won the Dunlop dual, beating his dad Craig by two seconds, whilst Ellen Roy roasted her mum Liz, beating her fellow Kilmarnock Harrier by some 22 seconds.

Finnies Photo Finish

It was a photo finish and a dead heat in the Finnie family as eight year old Eleanor and her father Niall crossed the line together to close the Fun Run in 70th and 71st place in exactly 1:00:00.
