2009 Marathon Season Arrives

Sunday's Lochaber Marathon was the first of a number of 26.2 mile races that Scottish runners will take part in over the next few weeks. The 369 competitors in the Scottish Highlands were followed the next day by some 25,000 runners, including a number of Scots, participating in the world's oldest annual marathon in Boston.

The fun continues this Sunday with up to 46,500 runners lining up to experience the joys of the Flora London Marathon. Monday 4th May will see some 16,500 runners spending their May Day holiday running in the 28th Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon. The Brathay Windermere Marathon on Sunday 18th May, around England's largest lake, has a limit of 1800 runners. The next Friday, around 60 runners will head up to Cape Wrath, the most north westerly inhabited locality of mainland Great Britain, to participate in what could be the toughest Marathon in the UK. The Newry City Marathon, which has attracted around 150 entrants to date, will take place on 25th May. Whilst Scotland's largest marathon and the UK's fastest, the Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon, reached it's limit of 11,500 in December 2008 and will be held on Sunday 31st May.
