McLoone Sees Off Henderson Brothers

2 NOV2009

The annual Greenock Glenpark Harriers club championship got off to a brilliant start on Saturday, October 31 as some 30 seniors took part in the club's Colin Shields handicap road race in almost perfect running conditions.

Favourite Alan Henderson was last to set off with the task of chasing down the other 29 runners, including his brother David, who had started just 30 seconds in front, alongside Stevie McLoone. It was veteran McLoone who set the early pace with David Henderson having to work hard to keep up with him. His brother applied himself from the off and was gaining ground early on. However he paid the price for his early exertions as he tired after the long climb over Hilltop Road. McLoone used all of his experience to extend his lead over the last mile, to beat the favourite by almost one minute with a time of 25:56. Alan Henderson held off his sibling to earn second place with 26:24, finishing 28 seconds ahead of his hotly tipped brother.

Fourth place and first super vet went to Phil Russell with an outstanding time of 28:09.

Women's Race
In the women's race guest runner Daniella Hughes was the favourite and she started 30 seconds behind under 17 year old Emily Pollock. Hughes managed to close the gap but by only five seconds to win the race with a time of 31:35. Pollok's 31:40 was however good enough to secure her second spot ahead of training partner Nynke Mulholland who took third place with 33:52.

The race for first woman veteran was just as close with Anne Hay closing down Maria Reay by just four seconds to win in a time of 34.31.
