Wayne Dashes to Victory in Jedburgh

This year's Jedburgh Running Festival, held on Sunday October 25, attracted over 1000 participants: 662 in the Half Marathon and 339 in the inaugural 10K road race.

The Half Marathon was won by Telford A.C's Wayne Dashper in 1:16:35. The 35 year old Royal Navy runner, who finished second at the recent Hawick 10k, went one better in Jedburgh, celebrating his recent birthday by winning the border town's eighth half marathon. James Britton (MS) ran a faster time than the 1:18:43 which was enough to see him win the Forfar Half in April this year however the Moorfoot athlete had to settle for second place with 1:18:05. Edinburgh based Stuart McLeod (38) earned third place with a time of 01:19:39.

Now fully recovered from her efforts in August, when she won the women's Lakeland Ultra Trail Race, Carnethy's Lucy Colquhoun (38) was the first women over the half marathon finish line, completing the windy course in 1:28:05. Unattached Katie Teague was just ten seconds behind completing the course in 1:29:55, only seven days after winning the Bradford City 10 mile race. Portobello's Lynn Morrice shaved 16 seconds off of her Loch Leven Half Marathon time to earn third prize with 01:31:45.

Kerry Swindon (V35) who achieved a new PB of 1:55:02 told www.scottishrunningguide.com:
"I seriously doubted my ability to even leave the car as we sat waiting in the car park, with the wind and the rain lashing around us. However, conditions magically improved ten minutes before the start and were pretty good for the whole race, although I wasn't impressed with the nasty headwind on the way back home! The course was beautiful, very scenic but it also had a few killer hills. The event was very well organised and although there was less support than on bigger races, what support there was, was vocal and enthusiastic. I'd definitely run it again but I will need to put a bit of hill training into my schedule before then."

10K Race

Cambuslang's Robert Gilroy won his fifth 10k of the season by becoming the first ever winner of the Jedburgh 10k. The diminutive athlete crossed the line in 33:02, well outside of his 30:34 PB but well in front of the competition. Central's Murray Maclarty went one better than his recent third placing at the Denny 10k to earn second place in 35:52. Teviotdale Harrier Wayne Mackintosh claimed third with 36:36.

The first woman across the line was Helen Waugh, the Northumberland athlete completing the course in 38:03, more than 200 seconds in front of second placed Caitlin Lloyd. Nineteen year old Lloyd (Jarrow & Hebburn) overcame tough competition from local veteran runner Anna Galbraith to finish ten seconds ahead of her older rival with a time of 40:46.

Lesley Marshall (V50) who completed the 10k race in 1:01:00 told www.scottishrunningguide.com: "I love the route for these races. I ran the Half Marathon two years ago but this year I decided on the 10k. On the day I had a sore throat and a cold so I had to settle for a gentle trot around the course rather than a race. It was a lovely scenic route, fairly hilly and the wind was strong in our faces on the way back. There was a great atmosphere at the race and a very nice medal for all finishers too."
