23 OCT2009

portopics

Haile Gebrselassie and Pamela Chepchumba won their respective races at the Oporto Sportzone Half-Marathon on Sunday, October 18.

The Ethiopian Marathon World record holder made a surprise low key appearance at the popular Portuguese race. However their was nothing low key about his performance as he battled against the strong winds to cross the finish line in just over one hour, finishing in a remarkable 1:00:04, more than one minute faster than the 1:01:25 course record set by Samuel Wanjiru a year ago.

Nicholas Koech of Kenya finished just 44 seconds behind the great man to earn second with a time of 1:00:48, with Ethiopian Terefe Maregu only 25 seconds behind him, finishing third in 1:01:13.

In the women's race Kenyan Pamela Chepchumba held off a strong challenge from fellow countrywomen Gladys Cherono and Pasalia Kipkoech to retain her title with an improved time of 1:10:24, three seconds faster than last year. Cherono and Kipkoech finished second and third respectively with times of 1:10:29 and 1:10:41.
