Corbies Rule the Roost in Fife

13 OCT2009

Records were smashed at Sunday's Giffordtown 5k race as the Raven family flew round the Fife course in perfect weather conditions. Emma had plenty to crow about as she not only won the women's race but also set a new course record, whilst husband James added to the family nest egg by earning the third place prize.

Following on from his fine performance at Saturday's West District Cross Country Championship, Cambuslang's Robert Gilroy, not only won the Fife AC race but set a new course record of 15:49. Stirling University mathematician Dr Jozsef Farkas applied himself to earn second spot in a time of 16:35, with Chester-Le-Street's James Raven finishing third in 16:46.

In the women's race, Central's Emma Raven completed the course in a record time of 17:47 to win first prize, ahead of Fife pair Morgan Murphy and Helen Sharpe who pushed each other all the way to finish in 18:05 and 18:06 respectively.

Signs advising runners that they had reached the last 400 and 200 metres may have encouraged some athletes to give their all until they crossed the finish line. In any event, local youngster Jennifer Kibble set a new FU20 course record of 19:01, Central's Jane Waterhouse set a new FV50 record and Fife AC's Sam Greaves set a new MV60 record of 20:42.

The race, which actually starts and finishes in Charlottetown, was closed by Anster Haddie Stewart Barnett, who finished in 102nd position with a time of 31:14, five seconds behind his daughter Jessie.
