Not So Flat In Oban

9 OCT2009

Perth Road Runner, Greg Simpson won the Atlantis Leisure Half Marathon in Oban on Sunday, October 4. Greg completed the scenic course in 1:15:10, almost a five minute gap ahead of second placed Grant Wilkie of Corstophine in 1:19:55. Local runner Gregor McGregor finished first vet in 1:20:36, with third place going to Neil MacNichol with 1:26:21. Portobello’s Willie Jarvie won the super vet’s race in 1:23:20.

The winning margin was even greater in the women’s race where Lochaber’s Nicola Meekin finished in 1:24:16, almost six minutes ahead of her closest rival Jaqueline Ramsay of Portobello in 1:30:11. Local runner Leigh Murray finished with a time of 1:42:25 to earn the first vet prize, whilst Dundee Road Runner Carol Greig took third prize in 1:45:32. Campbleton’s Jocelyn Richard won the women’s super vet race in 1:50:10.

Musselburgh’s Alexander Oliver, who finished in 15th overall position and 4th vet, with a time of 1:31:45, told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE: “Wow what a route. Possibly one of the most scenic and also toughest Half Marathons I’ve done. Described as almost completely flat on the website but actually undulated up and down for about 12 of the 13 miles. It’s the first time I think I’ve had to actually put my hands on my knees in a road race to force them up a hill. The small but deadly hills at mile 9-10 were just plain evil and yet, apparently, it was easier this year than last year! It was worth all the pain though as it was a lovely route along the west coast and the race was nice and friendly. Hopefully the experience will stand me in good stead for the Amsterdam Half in two weeks time, which doesn’t have a hill in site! I’d recommend this race this though for anyone looking for a Half Marathon next year.”

Ryan Dunn closed the race in 82nd position with a time of 2:40:08.
