27 SEP2009

The absence of Shettleston's Eritrean refugees from the annual George Cummins Road Relays afforded the host club Kilbarchan AAC with the opportunity to win the men's trophy for the first time since 1995, with a combined time of 52:28. Springburn Harriers won the women's race with a time of 47:11.

Men's Relay

In the men's 4x2.7 mile relay, Kilbarchan's young team consisted of the three Hawkins brothers and Connor McNulty. The eldest of the siblings, Derek (21) ran the fastest leg in a time of 12:42, ahead of Connor McNulty (20) 12:55, Calum Hawkins (17) 13:08 and Scott Hawkins (19) 13:42. Shettleston's home grown team was good enough to earn second spot with a total time of 53:44, whilst Kilbarchan's B team secured third place in the Houston event, with a time of 56:32.

Women's Relay

In the 3x2.7 mile women's relay, Springburn's Danielle Brown was the fastest around the challenging course in 15:13, ahead of Fiona Gentles 15:54 and Clare Gemmell in 16:04. Kilbarchan's women's team rounded off a great day for the Renfrewshire club by finishing in second place with 48:25. Garscube's combined time of 52:18 earned the Glasgow club third spot.

Kirkintilloch Olympians trio of Anne Marie McCaffrey, Marie McChord and Susan Addison won the women's vet prize.

Kilbarchan

The fastest runner on the day, Derek Hawkins told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE "It was a great team effort from Callum, Scott and Connor. I ran the third leg, we had a bit of a lead by then so I just had to run as fast as I could. I had a poor race at Falkirk recently but I trained hard this week and my confidence was high. I'm amazed at taken 23 seconds off of last year's time and even more amazed to find out that Kilbarchan hadn't won the trophy since 1995."
