Record Numbers and Record Times in the Glasgow Rain

7 SEP2009

running in the Glasgow rain

Well over 15,000 runners braved the Glasgow rain to participate in Sunday's Great Scottish Run. Some 7726 took part in the 10k road race, which started at the city's George Square at 9:30 am, with another 7760 taking part in the Half Marathon one hour later.

Whilst many runners were raising money for charity or fulfilling a personal goal, the events also attracted some top class performances with 19 year old Tsegai Tewelde, fresh from his success in Paisley last week, repeating his performance by setting a new 10k course record, becoming the first person to complete the course in less than 30 minutes. Jason Mbote also ran 10k in under 30 minutes yesterday; as he went on to win the Half Marathon in a new Personal Best time of 1.01:19. The Kenyan athlete took 17 seconds off of his previous PB, also set in Glasgow in 2006. Mbote's Kenyan counterpart Caroline Cheptonui Kilel won the Women's Half in 1:09:03, whilst Glasgow's Danielle Brown retained the Women's 10k title by storming home in 35:16, more than one minute faster than her time last year.

The Wheelchair Half Marathon races were won by Mark Telford and Kilbarchan's Jane Egan.

All 15,486 finishers received a well deserved medal, a banana and a goody bag, Glasgow's Roslyn Ghareh, who finished the Half Marathon in 2:15:58, told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE "I really enjoyed the race, although there was a bit of rain, it was still pretty good running conditions and the crowds of support were amazing."
