Wrong Turn Wilson Misses Out

27 AUG2009

The inaugural Ayr Seaforth Five Mile Trail Race was marred by the race leader, Kerry-Liam Wilson, being misdirected by a hapless steward. As Wilson battled his way through rose bushes and nettles, Irvine’s Alex Allardyce romped home to claim first prize in 27:41.

Some 55 runners competed in the new race which started and finished in Ayr's Dam Park Stadium and followed the trails along by the River Ayr.

Men’s Race

Unattached Brian McEwan (MV40), who finished fourth in the recent Kilmarnock equivalent race, finished behind Alex Allardyce (MV35), in 28:49 to earn second place. Westerland’s Chris Upson (MV40) finished in third position in 29:08, after a slight bit of marshalling confusion sent him the wrong way at four miles.

Kerry-Liam Wilson (MV35), who unfortunately went off course altogether just after four miles when sent the wrong way at a crucial turn, still managed to finish fourth overall in 29:46, although he should easily have won the race.

Women’s Race

It will come of no surprise that Ayr Seaforth’s very own Toni McIntosh (FS) won the Women’s Race, finishing in a time of 32:10. Troon based youngster Sarah Munn (FJ) earned second spot in 33:13, with the slightly older, Female Super Veteran, Jacqui Thomson (Victoria Park/City of Glasgow) finishing in third place in 33:49.

A disappointed Kerry-Liam Wilson told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDEI was initially furious at what had happened but there’s nothing that can be done. The organisers apologised and gave me a spot prize. I don’t think they could have done anymore to make sure everyone was happy.”
