Course Records Smashed in the Ayrshire Rain

20 AUG2009

There was a fantastic night of racing at the Irvine Marymass 10k on Wednesday August 19 with many of the runners recording PBs in the Ayrshire rain and winners Robert Gilroy and Claire McArthur setting new course records.

Some 124 runners braved the weather conditions to compete in the hotly contested race. Giffnock North’s David Phee took an early lead from Cambuslang’s Robert Gilroy and local runner David Millar with Gilroy’s club mate Kerry-Liam Wilson assuming fourth position ahead of Glasgow University pair Michael Deason and Daniel Bradford. However as the runners approached the 7k marker Wilson made his move and pushed fellow Cambuslang runner Gilroy all the way to the finish line.

Men’s Race

Robert Gilroy recorded his second fastest time ever to win his third race in a row in a time of 30:43. Girvan based Kerry-Liam Wilson took an amazing 75 seconds off of his PB to finish in second place in 31:03. Irvine’s David Millar was happy to settle for third spot as he clocked a new PB of 31:05. David Phee finished in fourth place with a new PB of 31:27.

Women’s Race

Hamilton based Claire McArthur, fresh from winning second place in the Women’s Race at the Helensburgh Half Marathon, went one better by taking 28 seconds off of her PB to finish first woman in a time of 37:32. Ayrshire starlet Sarah Munn took an impressive 72 seconds off of her PB to claim second place and record her first sub 40 minute 10k with a time of 38:58. Giffnock North’s Alison Winship finished 31 seconds later, with a second best ever time of 39:29, to earn third spot.

Speaking to SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE, Race Winner, Robert Gilroy said “I feel brilliant; it was a great race on a testing night. I’m going to celebrate with a Chicken Balti! Huge thanks to the other runners and to Irvine AC for such a great race.”

Women’s Race Winner Claire McArthur added “It was a great fast course, well marshalled and such good value at only £6”.
