Chris First and Second at Clydebank Canal Canter

7 AUG2009

Chris Devenney

In the second race of this week's Tour of Clydeside 4-race series, Kilbarchan's Chris Devenney took pride of place by beating Westerland's Chris Upson, on the Clydebank canal path, by 19 seconds. Helensburgh's Claire Heasman won the Women's Race ahead of Giffnock's Ruth Joss.

Chris Devenney (MS), Chris Upson (M40), Paul Thompson (M50) and Alex Chalmers (M40) stuck together for the first 2km or so. However soon after the turn the younger Devenney opened up a decisive gap, which never closed as Upson and Thompson battled it out for second spot and Chalmers dropped off of the pace.

Men's Race

Chris Devenney won the twisty and slightly undulating race with a time of 26:18. In a sprint finish Chris Upson claimed second place in 26:37, with Helensburgh's Paul Thompson finishing third in 26:38.

Women's Race

In a good night for Helensburgh AAC, Claire Heasman (F35) won the Women's Race with a time of 30:02. Giffnock North's youngster Ruth Joss (F20) finished 11 seconds later in second place with Westerland's Ellen Homewood (FS) maintaining her recent good form to take third spot in 30:30.

A total of 41 runners competed in the event on Tuesday August 4, with unattached Elizabeth Capstaff closing the race in 46:46.
