Scots Clean Up In Lakeland Mud
7 JUL2012

Top Scottish endurance runner Jo Zabrewski turned in a record-breaking performance in difficult conditions at last weekend's (Sunday, July 1) Lakelands Trail Marathon. The Dumfries AC ace finished in an impressive fifth place overall in a record time in 3:21:34 seconds. Sarah Ridehalgh was second in 3.27.44, with Hunters Bog Trotter Megan Wright making the podium in 3.40.47. Scottish club runners were also prominent in the half marathon with Fife AC's Helen Sharpe winning in 1.33.15.
On a day of remarkable performances Ambleside AC's Ben Abdelnoor smashed the course record in the marathon. His time of 2:53:50 meant that he was the first ever runner to complete the tough off-road circuit of Coniston Water in under 3 hours, lowering the previous best time by 8 minutes.
The course - rated by many as the most scenic trail marathon in the UK - enjoys great views of the lake and takes in the beauty spots at Tarn Hows and Beacon Tarn. Despite persistent heavy rain throughout the day, a record field of around 1,000 runners took part. There was a big international contingent as well as hundreds of charity runners, many in fancy dress - a penguin, a fairy and Minnie Mouse were spotted - adding colour to the occasion.
