Great Turnout Not Spoiled by Glasgow Fair Gremlins

18 JUL2009

For the second week in a row almost 250 runners participated in the Glasgow parkrun. Despite this being the first weekend of the traditional Glasgow Fair holidays, 243 people congregated outside the Burrell Collection in the City's Pollok Country Park.

With the absence of last week's scorching heat and the monsoon showers of recent days, the conditions were perfect for the ever popular, weekly parkrun. However the 33rd staging of the event was beset by gremlins, as one of the registration laptops malfunctioned losing the position details of some 70 runners. Although the lack of results did not spoil the occasion it does have an impact on one of the key aims of the event, which is to allow participants to compare their times with previous runs.

Results

The lack of information did not affect the first three runners over the line with Stephen Mathews (SM20-24) of East Kilbride AAC winning for the second time in 16:14. Charles Thomson (VM40-44) representing Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers taking second by 24 seconds recording 16:38. Giffnock North's George Taylor (VM45-49) placed third in a time of 17:22. However the women's results may well have been affected and will need to be clarified before being published.

Incident

There was also an incident requiring an ambulance to attend to help a runner. The runner stopped up short in some pain as he started the second lap. Although initially it looked as if he had a stitch, the Glasgow parkrun marshals and the runner's family were quickly on the scene and called an ambulance. Event organiser Richard Leyton told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE "I've just spoken to the runner, and he's fine. He's probably going to be taking it easy for a bit though, and probably marshalling in the next few weeks. We'd like to thank our volunteers Stephen Andrew, Casey Morgan and Iain Brown, and the other runners who stopped to help."
