British Runners Complete 2 Day Challenge

27 FEB2012

William Sichel

Despite suffering from recurring bouts of sickness, William Sichel successfully completed the 2 day treadmill challenge in Evreux on Friday (February 24). Britain's other endurance athlete, Sharon Gayter, also survived the gruelling 48 hours as French runner Christian Mauduit narrowly missed out on breaking the Guinness World Record.

Around 11 hours into the event, Sichel began to struggle after taking an electrolyte tablet and saw his average pace drop to 4 mph. Problems persisted throughout, with Sichel suffering from feelings of nausea at 34 hours and only managing to continue with the help of 15 minute naps. The endurance runner recovered, however, and amassed 149.16 miles.

Even though she received a late call-up after Christina Gonzalez Garcia's withdrawal, Sharon Gayter managed to assert herself well in southern France and finished marginally behind Sichel. Sharon, who recently set a Guinness World Record for covering 517.33 miles on a treadmill over the course of 7 days, finished on 141.69 miles.

Of the six athletes taking part in the event, French runner Christian Mauduit covered the most ground with 245.50 miles. Mauduit's performance, however, was not enough to surpass Irishman Tony Mangan's record of 251.80 miles.
