Cheruiyot Withdraws From Grand Prix

Cheruiyot Withdraws

Four-time World Champion Vivian Cheruiyot has announced that she will be unable to participate in Saturday's Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham. The Kenyan runner was due to take part in the 3k race but a bout of flu has resulted in her late withdrawal.

Tomorrow's event would have been Cheruiyot's only indoor race of the season and her first outing of 2012. The Kenyan commented: "Just before I began my journey to the UK on Wednesday, I developed flu and do not feel well enough to travel. I need to take a few days off to recover so I can resume training as soon as possible in this important year."

Despite her absence, the televised event will attract widespread interest with a host of top international stars all competing. The men's 1500m race will see Bernard Lagat, fresh from breaking the US 5km record last weekend, take on a trio of sub 3:30 athletes, whilst Farah will be competing in the 2 mile race and looks set to face strong competition from Commonwealth champion Moses Kipsiro.

The Aviva Grand Prix will be shown live on BBC 1 on Saturday from 1pm onwards.
