Sahara To Scottish Government For Ultra Runner

2 FEB2012

Dr. Andrew Murray

Dr. Andrew Murray, best known for completing a remarkable run from John O'Groats to the Sahara last year, has taken up a role as the Scottish Government's ambassador for physical health. The GP has agreed to a six month secondment to promote physical activity and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

The ultra marathon runner covered 2,659 miles and raised over £75,000 during his Scotland to Sahara challenge. During the 77 days that it took to complete, Andrew recruited more than 1,300 runners who joined him on various parts of the journey.

In his new position, the 31-year-old GP is keen to promote an inclusive approach as he aims to make Scotland a healthier nation: "Becoming, or staying active, is the single best thing you can do for your health." Andrew continued: "Research has shown that having a low level of fitness is equivalent in risk to having diabetes, smoking, and being obese combined."

Reflecting on his own experience, Andrew feels the key to success is persistence: "Running to the Sahara was tough. I'm not a natural runner and even got overtaken by a donkey one day so anyone can get fit. The first few days are the hardest but there is so much to gain."
