29 JUN2009

The phenomenon which is the Glasgow parkrun continues to attract new runners to the weekly 5k event. Saturday’s parkrun was the 30th to be held in the city’s Pollok Park and an amazing 66 new runners participated in the free time trial, taking the total number of runners on the day to an impressive 190.

Some 1370 people of various abilities have now completed the Glasgow parkrun, with 905 of these being unattached to jogging, running or athletics clubs.

Although Saturday’s Start and Finish lines had to be changed at the last moment, everything went perfectly. Regular parkrunner Luke Traynor (JM15-19) of Giffnock North AAC won the race for the second time. He crossed the line in 17:24. The women’s winner was unattached runner Sarah CARROLL (SW30-34), in a time of 19:33. Runners up were Connor RAMSAY (JM15-19) in 17:39 and Marcos SANZ, (SM25-29) of Bellahouston Road Runners in 17:46. In the women’s race, Claire HEASMAN (SW30-34), representing Helensburgh AAC, was second by 45 seconds with Sarah Louise JOHNSON (SW20-24), of Edinburgh University Hare & Hounds, placing third in a time of 21:19.

Glasgow parkrun relies 100% on the support of volunteers, run organiser Gillian Scott told SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE “We are short of volunteers for next week so if any of your readers are able to help out, get them to drop an e-mail to glasgowhelpers@parkrun.com.”
