Glasgow East Walk in the Park
28 JUN2009
Around 2,500 Glaswegians took part in the Glasgow East 5k Fun Run on the morning of Sunday, June 28. With the vast majority of those participating chosing to walk rather than run it was left to a few serious runners to make a race of the event. First home was Springburn's Jonathan Graham in an impressive time of 16:54 but the real winners were all of those who walked, jogged or ran the 5k, many doing so for the first time ever.
Real Community Event
Almost all runners were local residents and were proudly dressed in their white Glasgow East 5k t-shirts as they made their way from Tollcross Park along Tollcross Road, down Springfield Road, along London Road and up Braidfauld Street before finishing in the tree lined path in the park. As well as the t-shirts which had been posted out prior to the run, completers also received a goody bag containing a medal, a message in a bottle, a badge, a balloon (uninflated), a yo-yo, a tube of kid's toothpaste and a business card from a local Graffiti Artist.
Race Placings
Although in tune with the Fun Run ethos no official timings were taken and no prizes awarded, Springburn's Jonathon Graham was first over the finishing line follwed by Cambuslang's Andy Stevens and fellow Springburn runner Joe Chambers.
Speaking to SCOTTSIH RUNNING GUIDE race winner, Jonathan Graham said "This was my first time running this race. It was great to get the chance to run along traffic free roads. The organisation was excellent."
