West Highland Way Goes To Ballot

2 DEC2011

West Highland Way

Organisers of one of Scotland's most popular and successful long distance trail races, the West Highland Way, have confirmed that the competition has received more than the maximum amount of entries for the 2012 event.

The race, which is due to take place on Saturday, June 23, has attracted 259 entries but has a limit of 200 runners. Organisers have therefore scheduled a ballot by way of deciding on applicants.

Successful entries will be notified by email after the committee meets on December 5 and the full list of runners will be listed on the event website by mid December. Applicants who have completed 5 or more West Highland Way races, all winners of the event, current record holders and the founders of the race will, however, be granted automatic entry.

Since its inception in 1985, the event has established itself as one of the most challenging in the Scottish calendar. Participants begin at Milngavie (usually in the early hours) and travel through such iconic spots such as Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond, and Glencoe. Competitors must complete the 95 mile distance and 14,700 feet ascent in less than 35 hours.
