Dundee Remembers

29 NOV2011

Jenny Wood Allen

Runners and residents of Dundee will commemorate one of the city's most inspirational figures, Jenny Wood Allen, with a series of events on Sunday, March 25, 2012. The 'Jenny Wood Allen Sport Relief Mile' will pay tribute to a runner who completed her first marathon at the age of 73 and entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2002 as the oldest female to complete a marathon at the age of 90.

Following her death at the age of 99 last December, a group of volunteers and friends have been putting plans in place to honour her memory through the organisation of an event which will promote sporting opportunities for all.

The Jenny Wood Allen Sport Relief Mile will be held at Camperdown Park. It will consist of 6 mile, 3 mile and 1 mile routes as well as a wheelchair race. There will also be a Come & Try event where local sports clubs will offer opportunities for non-members to try out new sports and encourage them to join some of the numerous clubs in the city.

In addition to setting a Guinness World Record, Jenny completed more than 50 marathons and raised an estimated £40,000 for charity. She also set up Running Sisters Tayside, a club that still meets weekly at Douglas Sports Centre, and she was an active member of the Dundee City Disability Sport and SportDundee committees.

The event will raise funds for Sport Relief, while the organising group have also identified three other charities that Jenny supported, Save the Children, Children's Hospice Association Scotland, and Dundee City Disability Sport.
