Jedburgh Hits Ten And Keen To Add More

The Jedburgh Running Festival celebrated its 10th year in style with another record turnout as almost 900 people completed the half-marathon and 10k races. Despite the strong attendance, organisers are keen to develop the race and are considering adding another event to what is one of the most popular courses in southern Scotland.

Robert Gilroy of Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers and Chloe Cox (Lothian RC) prevailed in the half marathon race with times of 1:12:04 and 1:24:28 respectively. Ross Matheson (Lasswade) won the 10k event with an impressive time of 32:31, almost 3 minutes ahead of second-placed Darrell Hastie, whilst Edel Mooney of Lothian Running Club completed the course in 37:49.

As part of what was a comprehensive festival of racing, there was also a 10k wheelchair race. Simon Lawson won the event for the second year running with a time of 23:08 and in the process set a new course record. Jade Jones was the first female home with a time of 26:13.

Speaking to scottishrunningguide.com, event organiser John Henderson said he was delighted with the day's proceedings, commenting: "The event was another great success, the entries being again over 1000 for the second year and the actual number of runners completing the two races being a record 886 up 8 on last year."

While runners were enjoying post-race festivities, organisers were quick to announce the date for next year's event, set for October 28, 2012. John said one of the main objectives of the event is to keep attracting new runners, adding: "We are hoping to maintain a large number and hopefully a new record number of entrants. We are at this stage tentatively looking at introducing an Ultra Marathon to the list of race events but this will not be decided until later this year."
