Scot Impresses In Spanish Ultra

26 OCT2011

Lucy Colquhoun

Lucy Colquhoun of Carnethy Hill Runners shone in northern Spain as she finished first at the weekend's (Sunday, October 23) Ultima Frontera 160. Lucy completed the 160km ultra, which translates to around 100 miles, with an impressive time of 17 hours and 12 minutes, and in the process secured third position overall.

While no stranger to running long distance - she boasts a marathon PB of 2:51 and completed the 60-mile Fellsman in Yorkshire last year - the ultra was the first time Lucy ran 100-miles. Event director Paul Bateson commented on her performance: "Lucy had a great run, first woman and a brilliant third."

Following on from the success of the international multi-day race Al Andalus Ultimate Trial, this year represented the inaugural event for the Ultima Frontera 160. Perhaps instigated by the arrival of Scottish runners, the Poniente de Granada region experienced its first rainfall for almost four months with gloomy race-day conditions that only lightened up towards the end.

Paul hopes the success of this year's ultra will raise its future standing, "I think a 15 hour 43 mins (by Juan Carlos Cuellar Ruiz) winning time is pretty good. Overall I am very pleased with the event and can only urge UK trail-runners to come out and have a go at this next year."

For those that feel a 100-mile ultra may be a step to far, the event also hosts races at 50k and 80k. For more information and a full breakdown of this year's results, visit the Ultima Frontera 160 website.
