The North East

back to menu

The north east of Scotland is a beautiful part of the country, a fantastic training ground, with many different types of scenery to explore on your runs, including beautiful routes along the Moray Firth and North Sea coasts; undulating countryside, with lots of off road trails; and the edge of the Grampian Mountains for those looking for more of a challenge.

Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city and, offers numerous facilities, services and groups that runners can use and join. The city holds the annual Baker Hughes 10K, as well as several other road races throughout the year.

The north-east is characterised by rural communities, giving the area a friendly feel to visitors. The active community spirit in Moray has helped to create one of Scotland's most exciting events, the Moray Marathon 3 in 1. The Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K are accessible to all runners and there's a great atmosphere on race day. The towns and villages in the north east have a great network of clubs and running groups, including award-winning jogscotland Peterhead.

The area is also famous for runners like Mel Edwards, a former international marathon and cross-country runner, who now runs the Lynx Pack running group, based in Aberdeen; and the legendary Don Ritchie, a Forres Harrier, who has held 14 world best times for distances ranging from 50K to 200K.

In this section of the site SCOTTISH RUNNING GUIDE focuses on the north-east - its clubs, running groups, facilities and services.
